The (Latin) name Luna Maria, was chosen for several reasons. Firstly, it represents the dark patches on the moon, which are made up of Basalt – comprising of volcanic rock. I first became aware of Basalt stone, after observing killer whales rubbing on Vancouver Island beaches. Next, there is the association to the famous killer whale, Luna L98, who I worked with in 2003 and left a lasting impression on my life. Lastly, I was named Maria, after my Nordic great grandmother.
Second generation born on Vancouver Island, I connect with my Nordic heritage for creative inspiration. Bo (mother’s maiden name), is a Swedish/Danish name derived from an Old Norse nickname, bua, meaning “to live”. Everything I make is inspired by nature and is done as a form of art therapy for anxiety and hand tremor rehabilitation. For me, the name represents the synchronicity in my life and all that I love.
